Here are highlights in history for May 4, gleaned from the files of the Albert Lea Tribune:
1991 — Despite rainy weather, 239 bike riders participated in the 19th annual Freeborn County American Cancer Society Bike-A-Thon.
1981 — Only 30 of the 640 bike riders in the annual Bike-A-Thon completed the 100-mile route because of strong winds. The first rider to finish was Joe Frisk, 20 of Austin.
1941 — Amanda Karlson, Albert Lea’s oldest resident, died at the age of 100. She came to the U.S. from Sweden at the age of 50.
