Freeborn gets ready for town festival

FREEBORN — The city of Freeborn and Freeborn Township will once again take to the streets in celebration of Freeborn Days on Saturday, July 30.

Festivities within the community have been condensed into a single-day celebration and now call the last weekend in July its new home. Freeborn Days was historically held during the third week of June.

The city, named for William Freeborn, will begin the weekends events with a free will donation boosters breakfast at the American Legion hall. Breakfast will be served beginning at 7 and running until 10 a.m.

At the same time as the breakfast, the Freeborn Area Candle Auction will be holding a bake sale. This sale will also be held at the American Legion.

After breakfast, residents can wander around the area during the citywide rummage sale. The rummage sales begin at 8 a.m. and run until noon.

While all of the other events are happening on Saturday, the city also will host a volleyball tournament, bingo, a 4-H food stand and children’s activities. The 4-H food stand will be available from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Park Street.

The strike of noon will mark the beginning of the areas kiddie parade. Parade go-ers can expect to see participants decked out in their best Hawaiian and summer theme attire. The parade will assemble in front of Farmer’s State Bank.

At 12:30 p.m., kids games will begin on Park Street between 4th and 5th street. There will be various activities including a petting zoo, Jell-O eating contest and a moonwalk, among other attractions.

For the adults in the crowd, historian Kevin Savick will have his collection of pictures and artifacts of Freeborn’s history on display at the American Legion beginning at 1 p.m. Brownie sundaes will be available by the Freeborn Historical Society.

Freeborn Fire and Ambulance will host the area’s supper from 5 to 7 p.m. The 4-H food stand will be closed at this time. The dinner also marks the 65th anniversary of the fire department.

The Saturday festivities will wrap up with a street dance slated for a 7:30 p.m. start. Soul Flower will be the featured band at the dance.
