NBA player to join Woodside overseas

Thanks to the NBA lockout, Ben Woodside has a new teammate.

Twenty-four-year-old Danny Green, a forward for the San Antonio Spurs last season, has a signed a contract with KK Union Olimpija. a Euroleague team based in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Woodside, a 2004 graduate of Albert Lea High School, signed a one-year contract with the Slovenian club in July.

Green was drafted after his senior season at the University of North Carolina in 2009 to the Cleveland Cavaliers with the 46th overall pick. Green left North Carolina with the most wins of any player in school history and the only player in ACC history with 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 250 assists, 150 3-pointers, 150 blocks and 150 steals.

According to basketball-reference.com, the Cavaliers waived Green, a 6-foot-6-inch forward, on Oct. 19, 2010, and he was signed by the Spurs on Nov. 17. The Spurs waived Green less than one week later but resigned him on March 16, 2011 for the remainder of the season.

In eight games with the Spurs, Green averaged 5.1 points and 1.9 rebounds per game.

With the move to KK Union Olimpija, Green was reunited with former teammate Deon Thompson. In 2009, the two helped North Carolina win the NCAA title.

Green is part of a growing list of low-level NBA players joining teams overseas during the league’s lockout. Superstar players such as Deron Williams and Kobe Bryant, are rumored to also be considering playing in Europe or elsewhere.
