Here are highlights in history for Aug. 5, gleaned from the files of the Albert Lea Tribune:
1985 — Dwaine Winkels of Blooming Prairie became the newest member of the Albert Lea Police Department.
1975 — Mrs. Clair Christensen of Bricelyn won 104 blue ribbons at the Freeborn County Fair for her various foods and crafts entries.
1965 — Albert Lea Police were forced to shoot and kill a 1,200 pound steer on South Pearl Street. The steer had somehow escaped from a cattle truck and was reportedly threatening the crowd of people who had gathered to witness the event.
