50 years ago — 1961

  • Ken Sibilrud and Curt Hanson combined to throw a two-hitter for Hartland in their 6-1 victory over Trnity Lutheran in a Church Softball League playoff game.
  • Forty-year-old pitcher Warren Spahn, of the Milwaukee Braves, won his 300th game in his major league career with a six-hit 2-1 win over the Chicago Cubs.
  • The Minnesota Twins, behind the six-hit and 10-strike out pitching of Camilo Pascual, defeated the Boston Red Sox 6-5. Harmon Killebrew, Bob Allison and Pascual each had two hits for the Twins.

25 years ago — 1986

  • The Albert Lea High School girls’ tennis team opened up practice with three letterwinners, including Mary Brownlow, Tiffany Freese and Vickie Karge.
  • Frank Viola raised his pitching record to 12-8 in the Minnesota Twins’ 9-2 win over the Oakland Athletics. Mickey Hatcher had four hits for the Twins.

10 years ago — 2001

  • Albert Lea won the American Legion State Golf Tournament for the third straight year. Nate Rasmussen, of Albert Lea, won the tournament on the second hole of a playoff.
  • The Albert Lea City Pool lifeguards topped an 18-team field at the 11th Annual Southeast Minnesota Lifeguard Olympics held at the Rochester Recreation Center. Team members were Megan Menning, Megan Manemann, Andy Hertges, Beau Zuehl, Laura Grund, Melissa Barr, Chris Lowe and Ryan Lowe.
  • Kent Viesselman, head cross country coach at United South Central for the last 37 years, was inducted into the Minnesota Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame. USC had won seven consecutive Section 2A championships and five teams from USC have advanced to the state tournament. He had been named Minnesota Class A Coach of the Year.
  • The Minnesota Twins defeated the Cleveland Indians 6-4 and tied the Indians for first place. Eric Milton improved to 11-4 for the season. David Ortiz hit a pinch three-run homer for the Twins.
