Weekend Planner: From Borderfest to a special picnic for local veterans

Emmons Borderfest will feature a variety of different events this weekend in the town south of Albert Lea. See a feature story and schedule of events on Page 8 of today’s edition of the Tribune. Following is a list of other events in the area.
Friday
• Wedgewood Cove Golf Club will hold its first-ever invitational Friday and Saturday. It’s limited to 42 two-man teams. Call the pro shop at 507-373-2007 ext. 1 with questions. The invitational will feature a dinner on Friday evening.
• Riverland Theatre and Music Departments present the 14th annual alumni show, “Forbidden Broadway,” at 7:30 p.m. at the Frank W. Bridges Theatre at Riverland Community College’s Austin campus. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the Coffee House on Main in Austin and at the box office. The show will also be featured tonight at 7:30 p.m.
• The Johnny Holm Band will be featured at a street dance at 8:30 p.m. in Emmons as part of Borderfest.
Saturday
• The Albert Lea Farmers Market starts at 9 a.m. and goes until noon in the North Broadway Avenue parking lot.
• An Ascension Lutheran youth fundraiser will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Nelson’s Market Place. Cost is $2.
• A picnic for veterans of any era will be held at 1 p.m. in Northwood, Iowa. Burgers, brats, sloppy joes, sweet corn and lemonade will be provided, but people are encouraged to bring side dishes and desserts to share. The event will be held in Swensrud Park, and people are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. Call 641-293-5131 with questions.
• Borderfest’s parade will be held at 4 p.m. in Emmons.
• A concert will be held as part of Shinefest at 7:30 p.m. in the Edgewater Park Pavilion.
• Bad Monkey performs at a street dance at 8:30 p.m. in Emmons as part of Borderfest.
Sunday
• Ken Fiscus will lead a Pelican Breeze II cruise at 7 p.m. The theme will be discovering space. Reservations are needed by Friday by calling 507-383-2630. Cost is $15.
