AUSTIN — An Austin couple who reportedly hung up on police dispatchers after calling the Law Enforcement Center on Wednesday were arrested for alleged child endangerment and methamphetamine possession.
Police Captain Dave McKichan said police received the call around 3:15 p.m. Wednesday, but the caller hung up. Officers tracked the call to the 1600 block of Second Ave. SE, where they found a 24-year-old man and 37-year-old woman who appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and hard drugs. There were also two young children in the home, McKichan said.
“(The adults) were both quite possibly under the influence of alcohol and quite possibly a controlled substance,” McKichan said.
The man spoke with officers and reportedly admitted to doing meth. Police located meth paraphernalia in an outside garbage can, according to McKichan.
When police arrested the two, the man allegedly became unruly and attempted to kick out the window bars in the squad car. McKichan said he then tried to escape the car by jumping out and ramming his head into an officer’s stomach.
The man was maced, at which point he allowed officers to arrest him, McKichan said.
The couple will likely be criminally charged in Mower County District Court in the coming days. Charges could include possessing meth paraphernalia in the presence of children, child endangerment and fourth-degree assault of a peace officer.
