50 years ago — 1961

Trailing by a score of 22-3 after seven matches, the Albert Lea wrestling team won the last five matches and defeated Faribault 24-22. Gary Modin won at 145 pounds, Bruce Palmer at 154, Dan Jahns at 165, Byron Boer at 175 and Jeff Brooke at heavyweight.

The Albert Lea basketball team improved to 2-1 in the Big Nine Conference after defeating Faribault 64-47. Leading the Tigers were Clair Flaten with 30 points and Gary Jacobsen with 14.

The Emmons basketball team defeated Delavan 57-52. Don Osheim scored 16 points, Jerry Charlson 15 and Bob Berg 12 for Emmons.

25 years ago — 1986

Glenville won their third straight game when they defeated Lyle 64-59. The Trojans were led in scoring by Mark Schultz with 20 points and Mike Heideman and Rob Vierkant with 14 points each.

In a Border League East game, South Central outscored Freeborn 67-51. Terry Hintz and Mark Meyer each scored 18 points for South Central and Rodney Goette scored 24 for Freeborn.

Named to the 1986 All-Gopher Conference football team were Randy Severtson and Bruce Haberman from Glenville, and Mike Budach and Chan Routh from New Richland-Hartland.

Mike Petersen scored 18 points and Tim Struck 16 for Albert Lea in their 69-48 basketball victory over Austin.

Ellendale-Geneva defeated Emmons 68-67 behind 20 points by Tomm Richards, 15 by Troy Janka and 13 by Drew Vangen. Eric Sheehan for Emmons led all scorers with 29 points.

10 years ago — 2001

Named to the All-Big Nine girls’ soccer team were Mariah Levison and Amy Ravenhorst. Receiving Honorable Mention was Stephanie Overgaard. Named to the All-Big Nine boys’ soccer team was Jason Christianson. Josh Kasper and Josh Johnson received Honorable Mention.

Ben Woodside with 18 points, Tyler Young with 17 points and 14 rebounds and Josh Kasper with 16 points led Albert Lea to a 65-60 victory over Faribault.

Minnesota Gophers men’s basketball freshman Rick Rickert scored 28 points and had nine rebounds in their 75-71 win over Oregon.
