The Albert Lea boys’ swimming and diving team advanced to the Section 1A championships on Thursday in Inver Grove Heights.

The top eight places in each event qualified for the championship, while ninth through 16th qualified for the consolation finals.

The Tigers’ 200-yard medley relay team on Isaac Olson, Corbin Schultz, Preston Smith and Larry Holcomb placed seventh in a personal-best one minute and 48.65 seconds.

Smith placed fourth in the 100-yard butterfly in a personal-best 56.76 seconds. The state cut was 57 seconds.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Smith, Holcomb, Andy Ehrhardt and Dan Gould placed seventh in 1:38.36.

Gould qualified for the consolation finals in the 200-yard individual medley, and Smith swam a personal best to qualify in the 50-yard freestyle.

Olson swam a personal best in the 100-yard freestyle to qualify for the consolation finals in the 100 freestyle , and Gould qualified in the 500-yard freestlyle.

Olson qualified for the consolation semifinals in the 100-yard backstroke, and the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Gould, Olson, Ehrhardt and Corbin Schultz also qualified.

Those who qualified for the championship and consolations finals swam again on Saturday in Inver Grove Heights.
