Lake dredging not in House bill

Neither of Albert Lea’s major requests were included in the Minnesota House of Representatives version of the bonding bill proposed Monday.
The bill proposed a $280 million package of construction projects that focused on refurbishing buildings at state colleges and universities, along with road and bridge improvements.
District 27A Rep. Rich Murray, R-Albert Lea, said the proposed $7.5 million bonding request to dredge Fountain Lake, along with the $3 million Riverland Community College request for demolition, renovation and reconfiguration of space at the school, were not included.
He said the Riverland request is further down the list of redesign priorities under the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system, but he still hopes to get funding for the dredging project.
“I don’t know if this number is done yet,” Murray said. “We can see if it moves up any. If we can find some more money to put in that bill, we’ll try to get something in there.”
Murray noted that about $9 million — out of $13.5 million requested — was included for the expansion of the Hormel Institute in Austin.
The GOP bonding proposal is nearly $500 million smaller than what Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton proposed. It does not include funding for a number of local projects Dayton wants, including civic centers in Mankato and Rochester. It does include bonds for the St. Cloud Civic Center and a new St. Paul Saints ballpark in downtown St. Paul but at lower levels than proposed by Dayton.
The House GOP is pushing a separate, $220 million borrowing plan to restore the Capitol building. That bill was slated for a hearing Tuesday in the House Capital Investment Committee.
Senate Republicans have not yet unveiled their bonding proposal.
Murray expected the Senate version of the bonding bill to be larger than the one proposed in the House.
“It’s a very fluid situation,” he said. “There will be some changes in it before we get to the end of session.”
