Pelican Breeze needs volunteers

The Pelican Breeze has made some changes before its upcoming season starts and is still in need of volunteers from the community.
One of the biggest changes to the schedule is that Saturday public cruises are canceled. Paul Stieler, president of the Pelican Breeze Foundation, said public cruises will still be available on Sundays.
“There’s a lot of requests for private cruises on Saturdays,” Stieler said.
The nonprofit volunteer foundation board also said the boat will continue to operate for special events and that more events will be announced closer to the season. There will still be public pizza cruises on the second and fourth Friday of each month, with pizza from Green Mill.
Another issue this year is the dwindling number of volunteers for the boat. A person to take reservations, first mates and captains are needed. To be a captain there is some training, and licensure from the state is needed.
“For first mates we can provide the training, and anybody can do it,” Stieler said.
Stieler said first mates collect money for tickets, sometimes provide drinks and often tell history or talk about the wildlife while the cruise takes place.
