GLENVILLE — Glenville-Emmons High School could be without baseball for a couple years, according to head coach Louie Toulouse.

After winning consecutive Southeast Conference championships and posting a 13-6 record last season, the Wolverines graduated a large crop of seniors, and Toulouse said only six players signed up for the team this season.

Toulouse said there are enough students to field a baseball team, but, for whatever reason, there isn’t enough interest. There will be no varsity or junior varsity team, and Toulouse plans on coaching the program’s junior high team, whose players he hopes can fill a varsity roster in the coming years.

“We have plenty of kids and some pretty good athletes not doing anything else,” Toulouse said. “You never know what’s going to happen. It never used to be this way.”

Glenville-Emmons Activities Director Craig Rayman said he’s already explored other ways to get the interested players on the field for a different school. He said he’s contacted Albert Lea and Lyle/Pacelli, but the Wolverines players aren’t interested in playing elsewhere.

Some may go out for boys’ golf instead, said Rayman, who is also the team’s coach.

Toulouse said Glenville-Emmons lost its Legion baseball team and its midgets program over the last few years, and the numbers in its summer program have dwindled.

Toulouse said it’s “debatable” whether the Wolverines will take the field again over the next two to three years.

“We’re pretty much done,” he said, referring to the near future.
