Titonka bank burns
Published 9:37 am Monday, April 16, 2012
The Titonka Savings Bank in Titonka, Iowa, burned early Sunday, with the fire starting around 3 a.m. There were no injuries and four fire departments responded. Nearby residences were evacuated. Tribune Managing Editor Tim Engstrom, who once had great-grandparents living in that town, happened to drive through on Sunday afternoon and snapped this image. The remains still were smoldering. Despite the damage, the bank vault remained secure. The bank will continue operations because it had a backup plan in place, according to a statement. Titonka Savings Bank has branches in Forest City and Thompson. The cause remains unknown, but townsfolk were saying faulty wiring was suspected. -- Tim Engstrom/Albert Lea Tribune
