Weekend Planner: Cantori to present 40th anniversary concert

The Albert Lea Cantori presents a 40th anniversary concert at 3 p.m. Sunday at Albert Lea’s United Methodist Church. The concert is free and open to the public.
Former members will sing with the current choir during a special alumni piece. The highlight of the concert will be the performance of “William Shakespeare,” a choral work commissioned by the Cantori to commemorate the 40th year milestone. The group performs around the community and surrounding area for a spring concert and during the holidays. Eileen Nelson Ness has directed the group since 1979. There will be donations accepted and a reception following the concert.
Friday
• Glenville-Emmons’ Spanish club holds a fundraiser from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Albert Lea American Legion. Cost is $8 for your choice of a chicken strip basket, burger basket or pulled pork basket.
• Albert Lea Community Theatre presents “How to Talk Minnesotan” at 7:30 p.m. at the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center. Cost is $18 for adults and $10 for students.
Saturday
• A Young Eagles rally will be held from 8 a.m. to noon at the Albert Lea Airport.
• The Freeborn County Red Cross presents babysitter training from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at its office on Fountain Street.
• Hometown Pride Cleanup Day is from 9 a.m. to noon at the city of Albert Lea Transfer Station and Demolition Landfill. Many items will be taken for free or at reduced rate; must have proof of city residence.
• Freeborn County participates in the national Drug Take Back Day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Freeborn County Fairgrounds. For safety reasons it’s a drive-through event; volunteers will take unused medicines. No Sharps or needles will be taken and drugs should remain in their original containers. The event is coordinated by the Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office, Albert Lea Police Department, Freeborn County Environmental Services Department, United Way of Freeborn County and Freeborn County Partners in Prevention.
• United Methodist Church will host a brunch and quilting show. The brunch will be at 9:30 a.m. and a program begins at 10:30 a.m. Cost is $10.
• A rally for local Girl Scouts celebrating the 100th anniversary will be from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Northbridge Mall. There will be samples of food made with Girl Scouts cookies, entertainment and recognition of troops. The public is invited.
• ACT presents “How to Talk Minnesotan” at 7:30 p.m. at the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center. Cost is $18 for adults and $10 for students.
Sunday
• A pancake breakfast benefitting Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea’s hospice program will be from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Bonnerup Funeral Service. Menu includes pancakes, sausage, eggs, coffee, juice and milk. Donations will be accepted.
• The American Legion Auxiliary will host a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Cost is $7 and children under age 6 get in free. Menu includes pancakes, sausage, eggs, breakfast potatoes and drinks.
• The Sons of Norway will host a pannakaker breakfast from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost is $7.
• The Kiester volunteer firefighters host a pancake breakfast from 7 a.m. to noon at the Kee Town & Country Centre in Kiester. Donations will be accepted and will go to the purchase of a digital projecter for the Kee Theatre. Menu includes pancakes, French toast and more.
• The Gordy & Debbie Show, live from Branson, Mo., will perform from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at the Southwest Little Theatre. The show is a fundraiser for the Albert Lea American Legion. Cost is $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Tickets are available at the American Legion, Hy-Vee, Nelson’s Market Place, the Albert Lea-Freeborn County Chamber of Commerce and the Albert Lea Convention and Visitors Bureau.
