At the True Team track and field competition in Mapleton on Thursday, New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva’s TJ Schiltz set a school record in the 1,600-meter run.
“He’s been chasing it for a couple years,” Panthers coach Duey Ferber said. “This year he’s been close a couple times.”
Schiltz set the record at 4 minutes and 41.79 seconds.
The previous record was set by Keith Berg in 1996 with a time of 4 minutes and 42.3 seconds.
In addition to the one-mile, Schiltz was four seconds away from setting a record in the two-mile during the meet.
As a sophomore competitor Ferber said the school will be able to enjoy Schiltz’s talent for a couple more years.
