The fifth annual Bikes for Barker motorcycle ride will be Saturday. The community is invited to the event that raises funds for scholarships for local youth.

One of its organizers, Josh Barker, said his family teamed up with Fountain Centers, a Mayo Clinic Health System program for substance abuse and addiction, to start the ride.

“Every year we have it we’re able to reinvest and give out more money,” Barker said. “We’ve been able to give more than $5,000 in scholarships since we started.”

On Saturday the day will start with a pancake breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Albert Lea Armory. Then a 100-mile motorcycle ride starts in Albert Lea and goes to Lansboro. An 11-mile bicycle ride will start at the head of the Root River Trail in Fountain and end at the city park in Lanesboro.

A donation of $5 is suggested for the breakfast. Registration for the ride is $20 per motorcycle and $10 per biking family. There will be a luncheon celebration in Lanesboro, and a suggested donation of $5 for that.

“The event is entirely open to the public,” Barker said.

The day also includes a free youth fishing contest with prizes. A raffle will also be held. All money raised goes toward the Garth Barker Memorial Scholarship Fund, which assists students going into chemical dependency counseling and other careers.
