In her second time ever swimming the 100-yard butterfly, Albert Lea’s freshman star, Lindsey Horejsi set both the school and pool records on Thursday night with a time of 59.29 seconds during a meet against Mankato East.

“Lindsey is a great leader,” Tigers head coach Jon Schmitz said. “She’s serious, but she likes to have fun too.”

The butterfly wasn’t the only record change. Four freshmen swimmers including Horejsi, Bailey Sandon, Anna Andersen and Haley Simon set the school record in the 400-yard relay with a time of 3 minutes, 46.82 seconds.

“We’re really excited,” Schmitz said. “This is a whole different team than last year. A lot of kids prepared over the summer and are responding to training.”

In the 500-yard freestyle Sara Rasmussen placed first with a time of 5:59.76.

According to Schmitz, the time was just shy of another school record.

“She was amazing,” he said.

Another strong scorer for the Tigers, Karli Kriewall, won the diving competition with 231.5 points. The second-place finisher, Makenna Friehl, was also from Albert Lea and scored 153.6 points.

“Karli had her season best tonight,” Schmitz said. “She looked solid on the board and gave an outstanding performance.”

Simon received the team’s Swimmer of the Meet recognition for her performance in the 200-yard freestyle and playing a role on the record breaking relay team.

Even though some swimmers had more notable scores than others, Schmitz said the whole team had a phenomenal meet.

“They were clocking really great times,” Schmitz said. “What’s nice is that we had a super hard week of training beforehand. We usually have to rest for that type of performance and we didn’t, so it just shows we have some good times coming.”

The Tigers will now prepare to face Mankato West on Sept. 27 at an invitational in Mankato.

Schmitz said like the Tigers’ Horejsi, West has an Olympics trial qualifier on its team, Danielle Nack.

“Probably the two best swimmers in the league will see each other,” he said.

The meet is scheduled for 6 p.m.
