The Albert Lea wrestling team placed first at the Rumble on the Red tournament over the weekend in Fargo, N.D.
As a team, the Tigers scored 166.5 points. West Fargo also scored 166.5 points. Jackson County Central took third with a team score of 160 points.
“We had a good showing up there,” Tigers head coach Larry Goodnature said. “Winning it is a big accomplishment for us.”
Individually, the Tigers secured one first-place win, three fifth-place wins and one sixth-place win.
Garrett Wansgness was the first-place winner in the 113 pound class. Wansgness (16-1) won a 4-3 decision over Paul Mascarenas (18-1) from New Mexico who is ranked No. 3 in the nation.
“Garrett had a heck of tournament,” Goodnature said.
Beau Johnsrud, Tristan Westerlund and Lucas Hansen were the fifth-place winners.
Johnsrud (14-7) won his final match at 106 pounds by a forfeit over Lucas Brown (17-3) of Carrington.
Westerlund (16-4) won his final match over Adam Garms (12-5) of Adrian by a 2-0 decision.
Hansen (18-4) took fifth place after a 4-3 decision over Brett Bradford of Byron.
The Tigers’ sixth-place win came from Dakota Wangsness. Wangsness (13-6) was defeated by Tom Walton (25-2) of Fargo North by an 8-5 decision.
Overall the Tigers had 20 pins in the tournament.
“That’s what helped us win the tournament,” Goodnature said. “We’re a pinning team. These kids aren’t satisfied with winning a regular decision match.”
The Rumble on the Red had 66 teams competing with five different states being represented. In addition, Goodnature said there were five state championship teams in the tournament.
The Tigers entered 11 out of the 14 classes.
“It’s a grueling tournament and I was happy how the kids handled the situations and wrestled hard,” Goodnature said. “All of our guys won some matches and contributed to the final score.”
The Tigers wrestle again Thursday in a triangular at Mankato East.
