An Albert Lea man received severe burns Wednesday morning after his car started on fire on Y.H. Hanson Avenue.
Matthew Craig Indrelie, 23, was reportedly treated by Gold Cross Ambulance crews for his injuries and transferred to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, where he was listed in good condition Wednesday afternoon, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
Regions Hospital is known for its burn unit.
Albert Lea Public Safety Director Dwaine Winkels said dispatchers received a call that a 2003 silver Saab was on fire at 5:57 a.m. at 2410 Y.H. Hanson Ave., near Albert Lea Select Foods.
Police reports stated a woman who was in the breakroom at Select Foods reportedly witnessed the incident.
She told police Indrelie appeared to be having a difficult time controlling his vehicle prior to the incident and that she saw blue smoke and then some type of explosion that started the fire.
Indrelie reportedly crawled out of the fully engulfed car through the driver’s side window.
He was treated at the scene by bystanders and officers for his burns prior to the arrival of paramedics.
Indrelie reportedly told police he didn’t remember anything about the incident other than stating he felt like his vehicle had been hit from behind.
Firefighters are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire.
