SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — A South Dakota State University runner has died after being hit by a van while training in Minnesota.

Nineteen-year-old Phillip LaVallee was killed around noon Thursday near his home in Otsego.

The Wright County Sheriff’s Office says that LaVallee was running on the shoulder of a road and was hit by a van that had crossed the centerline. The 67-year-old driver was flown to a Minneapolis-area hospital.

The incident remains under investigation.

Jackrabbits coach Rod DeHaven says LaVallee was incredibly well liked and respected, and it’s going to tough on the coaches and kids in the program.

LaVallee placed 15th at the Summit League cross country meet as a true freshman last fall.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
