The Southeastern Minnesota Chamber Orchestra kicks off its 2013-14 season at 7 p.m. Sunday with a pops concert. The concert will be in the Albert Lea High School auditorium. This is the orchestra’s fourth full season. Orchestra members come from throughout southeastern Minnesota and northern Iowa and range in age from high school students to seasoned musicians. The orchestra is under the direction of Brock Besse. In recognition of the dedicated years Orrie Jirele played with the orchestra, the concert will be presented in his memory.
The fall pops concert will feature music from the movies, radio and the Broadway stage. Selections include the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber, Cole Porter and John Williams, as well as that of The Beatles and Journey. Joining the orchestra as vocalists will be Paul and Kristin Johnson and Lori Griffin.
The Johnsons are not strangers to the Albert Lea audiences as they have sung with the orchestra in the Hooked on Classics concert in February of 2011 and in the Look to the Day concert in April of 2013. Griffin is a member of the orchestra playing second oboe for the past year and she is stepping out from the orchestra to share her soprano voice. She hails from Owatonna where she practices medicine, but also participates in many musical opportunities. This concert has a mix of pop music that is sure to include something for everyone in the entire family.
Tickets for this concert are available at the Lighthouse Event Center and from members of the orchestra. The cost is $8 for adults and $6 for seniors. There is no charge for K-12 students. All tickets are $10 at the door. For more information contact Lilah Aas at 373-8617.
