Albert Lea wrestlers drop road meet

Albert Lea lost a battle of ranked wrestling teams Friday at Adrian.

The No. 8 Class AA Tigers lost 41-25 to the No. 6 Class A Dragons.

Albert Lea won six matches with one fall, three decisions, one major decision and a forfeit.

The Tigers’ only fall came at heavyweight. Will Mendez pinned Gavin Engelkes in less than 1 minute.

In the 138-pound match, Albert Lea’s Devin Nelson won a 1-0 decision over Tony Lynn. Lynn is ranked No. 3 in Class A.

Bryce Hoyt earned Albert Lea’s first win of the day at 113 pounds with a 7-6 decision over Greg Kern. Beau Johnsrud, the No. 4 wrestler in Class AA, followed suit at 126 pounds. He beat Logan Nelson 10-4. Derek Samudio beat Carter Van Dyke 22-10 at 160 pounds, and Tim Christianson won by forfeit.

The 106-pound match pitted Albert Lea’s Garrett Aldrich against Adrian’s Skyler Hieronimus. Aldrich is ranked No. 7 in Class AA and Heironimus is No. 1 in Class A. Hieronimus won with a 6-4 decision.

The Tigers finish the regular season at 5 p.m. Thursday in a quad at Mankato West.
