The Albert Lea Police Department is reminding football fans planning to drink on Super Bowl Sunday to plan ahead for a sober ride home before getting behind the wheel.

The Albert Lea Police Department will be stepping up DWI enforcement patrols to sack drunken drivers as Minnesota tries to make it six years running without a drunken driving death on Super Bowl Sunday, according to a news release.

There were 996 motorists arrested for drunken driving in the last five years on Super Bowl Sunday, along with six traffic deaths, none of which were alcohol-related.

“Planning for a sober ride and making it a habit goes a long way toward stopping preventable traffic deaths,” said Albert Lea Police Department Lt. Jeff Strom. “In order to keep this Super Bowl streak going for a sixth consecutive year, we need everyone to plan for a sober ride home.”

In addition to planning for a safe ride, people should buckle their seat belts and report any impaired driving behavior.

Each year, about 28,000 people are arrested for DWI, and one in seven Minnesota drivers has a DWI on record, according to the release.

A DWI offense can result in the loss of a driver’s license for up to a year, thousands in costs and possible jail time.

Repeat DWI offenders, as well as first-time offenders arrested at 0.16 and above alcohol-concentration level, must use ignition interlock to regain legal driving privileges, or face at least one year without a driver’s license. Offenders with three or more offenses are required to use interlock for three to six years, or they will never regain driving privileges.
