Sophia Schmidt, 98, Clouquet

Sophia Estella Schmidt, 98, of Cloquet died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, in Augustana Care Center in Moose Lake. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Casimir Catholic Church in Wells. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church. The Rev. Thomas Niehaus will officiate, and burial will be at a later date. Please see www.brussheitner.com to leave online condolences. Sophia was born to Charles and Minnie Dumbeck on Feb. 21, 1915, in Frazee. She grew up in Frazee and attended school there for several years and later in Walnut Lake Township. On Nov. 23, 1937, she married Henry in Wells.

She enjoyed gardening, fishing, spending time outdoors and she loved animals. Sophia especially loved spending time with family and her grandchildren. Some of her grandchildren’s favorite memories were spending time fishing in the river with grandma and going on trips to the Grotto of the Redemption in West Bend, Iowa. Sophia was a kind, caring and compassionate person, with a mischievous sense of humor.

Sophia was preceded in death by her husband, Henry; parents Charles and Minnie; son, Walbert; daughter, Patricia Evans Bybee; brothers Joseph Ira, William, Warren and John Dumbeck; sister, Julia Quittschreiber, and Hazel Elizabeth Schmidt.

She was survived by her daughters Linda Springer of Cloquet and Susan (Frederick) Otto of Mankato; daughter-in-law, Jolene Rice Schmidt; grandchildren Brian F. Evans, Jean L. Schmidt, Fay L. Bybee, James R. Springer, Scott K. Springer, Terry L. Springer, Katie E. Otto, Vanessa Otto and Cassandra (Mike) Kurth; eight great grandchildren and one on the way; and brothers David Charles Dumbeck of Frazee and Thomas Aaron Dumbeck of Frazee.
