After a four-game winning streak, the Albert Lea girls’ basketball team followed Saturday’s two-point triple overtime loss with a two-point loss Tuesday at Byron.
At halftime, Byron led 40-31.
“We had a slow first half,” said Albert Lea head coach Lindsey Hugstad-Vaa. “In the second half, we adjusted and played well.”
The Tigers had a two-point lead late in the game, Hugstad-Vaa said. But Byron managed to recapture the lead to win 67-65.
In the second half, Albert Lea outscored Byron 34-27.
Four players scored for the Tigers, and they all scored in double figures.
Sydney Rehnelt led the way with 19 points. She also tacked on four rebounds and three assists. Megan Kortan led Albert Lea on the glass with eight rebounds to go with 18 points, four assists and four steals.
Bryn Woodside scored 16 points, and Fran Eckstrom added 12.
Byron’s Vanessa Anderson scored a game-high 24 points.
Both teams shot well from beyond the arc. Albert Lea was six of 17, and Byron was eight of 13.
The Tigers won the rebounding battle 29-27 and had fewer turnovers, 19-16.
Next, Albert Lea (10-15 overall, 7-10 Big Nine Conference) will host Owatonna at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
“It’s Parent’s Night, and it’s going to be a good challenge for us,” Hugstad-Vaa said.
The Huskies (22-0 overall, 16-0 Big Nine Conference) are on a 10-game winning streak dating back to Jan. 24. Albert Lea lost the first meeting 70-49 at Owatonna.
The Tigers’ 6-4 record in Section 1AAA has them set up for the No. 3 seed in the postseason bracket. However, Hugstad-Vaa said the coaches will vote on the seeds.
In terms of overall winning percentage, Albert Lea is fifth in the section.
