ST. PAUL — Albert Lea’s individuals started the Class AA state wrestling tournament with a perfect first round Friday at the Xcel Energy Center.

Garrett Aldrich started the Tigers off with a 12-4 major decision over Michael Menth of Totino Grace at 106 pounds.

The next three Albert Lea wrestlers pinned their opponents.

Devin Nelson took down Austin Hjelle of Thief River Falls in 3 minutes and 10 seconds at 138 pounds. Dereck Samudio pinned Nate Tesch of Glencoe-Lester Prairie in 4 minutes and 14 seconds at 152 pounds, and Triston Westerlund took care of Minnehana/DeLaSalle’s in 1 minute and 34 seconds at 195.

The Class AA quarterfinal round starts at 5:30 p.m. today.
