GLENVILLE – The Glenville-Emmons High School gym was packed Tuesday night for the biennial Glenville FFA Donkey Basketball Tournament.
The FFA is a leadership and agricultural program. Proceeds from Tuesday’s tournament went toward funding the program at the high school.
Angie James, the FFA advisor at the school, said the school’s been hosting the tournament every other year since 1994. James played on the Glenville All-Stars, one of four teams that participated in the tournament.
The Glenville FFA Team beat out the All-Stars in round one of the tournament, while the Glenville Alumni Team beat NRHEG FFA. The alumni went on to beat Glenville FFA 6-0 in the championship round.
Donkey basketball has a few rules. Players wear helmets the entire time and must be sitting on top of their donkeys when they attempt a shot. They can get off of their donkey to reach for a loose ball, but they should be holding onto their donkey’s reins the whole time.
The donkeys involved in the games Tuesday were fairly good sports, with a few being stubborn here and there, and two had a penchant for kicking. Hannah Lundberg, Jade Schultz and Carlie Wagner of the NRHEG girls’ basketball team that was the Class AA state champion was on hand to help with waste management.
“It’s fun,” said James. “I tend to have more fun watching the kids play than riding myself though.”
