Stranded baserunners led to a 6-1 loss for the Albert Lea baseball team Tuesday at Rochester Century.

“We had a couple chances to break the game open,” said Albert Lea coach Joe Sczublewski. “We left with the bases loaded twice (in the third and sixth innings). We’re still looking for that timely hit.”

After Rochester Century took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, Albert Lea answered in the top of the third. With the bases loaded, Wyatt Paulsen took his base after ball four to score Johnathan Fleek.

However, the Panthers responded with one run in the bottom of the third, two in the fourth and one in the sixth.

Along with leading the Tigers at the plate by going 2-for-2, Sczublewski said Paulsen led the team defensively in center field.

“They had the bases loaded in the sixth, and Wyatt made a sensational catch to end the inning,” Sczublewski said. “He really laid out for that one and picked it up off the top of the grass.”

Tristin Muilenburg and Parker Mullenbach shared time on the mound for Albert Lea.

Next, Albert Lea hosts a doubleheader today. Game 1 is at 4 p.m. against Owatonna. Game 2 is at 6 p.m. against Mankato West.
