Veterans will be honored again this year with a festival sponsored by Albert Lea’s local branch of Beyond the Yellow Ribbon.

Beyond the Yellow Ribbon presents its third annual Freedom Festival from 4 to 10 p.m. today at the Fountain Lake Gazebo.

Free hot dogs and refreshments will be available. Visitors can enjoy live entertainment at the event. Minnesota National Guard Sgt. 1st Class Jeff Dahlen, the military point of contact for Beyond the Yellow Ribbon, hopes that the day will be fun and relaxing for everyone.

There will also be a memorial for all the Minnesota servicemen and women who have died since 9/11. The memorial will feature the names and dog tags of the fallen men and women.

Albert Lea’s Gail Springborg, a survivor outreach services support coordinator with the U.S. Army, managed to procure the memorial for Albert Lea’s Fourth of July celebrations.

This festival is put on by Beyond the Yellow Ribbon to say thank you to the veterans and their families in the community, Dahlen said.

The rain site for the memorial will be at the Albert Lea American Legion Hall at 142 N. Broadway. Beyond the Yellow Ribbon is working in conjunction with the Legion for this festival.

Albert Lea’s Beyond the Yellow Ribbon is made up of representatives from city leadership, public safety, churches, veterans’ organizations and other businesses. The group’s purpose is to hold activities, build awareness and provide support for deployed service members and their families.
