The second-longest running match play golf tournament in the state will continue today and Monday at Green Lea Golf Course.
The qualifying rounds for the 87th annual Shortstop Tournament were Saturday. Match play begins today at 7 a.m. and will continue at 7:30 a.m. Monday. The top 16 golfers will qualify for the championship flight, and the finals will be at 1 p.m. Monday with awards at the conclusion of the tournament for first through fourth places as well as the consolation champion in each flight.
Course owner Jeff Elseth said last year’s tournament champion, Chris Baas, will return to defend his back-to-back titles. Since 1999, Baas won the Shortstop Tournament seven times, including four of five years from 1999 to 2003.
Last year’s runner-up, Alex Lair, will also be competing.
“Being able to visit with players and spouses who come back year after year is enjoyable,” said Elseth. “It’s also great to see new players every year as word gets around what a great event this is. People love to follow their favorite players around the course. It adds to the excitement and atmosphere of the tournament.”
Participation in the Shortstop Tournament is limited to the first 128 paid entries, and all players are 21 or older.
The tournament started in 1927.
