After almost 24 years of being county attorney, Craig Nelson isn’t planning on going anywhere anytime soon.
Nelson, 64, will add another four years onto that tab as he’s running unopposed in the Nov. 4 election. He’s been a lawyer in the Albert Lea area for about 38 years. He and his wife, Mary, live at 72348 197th St. in Albert Lea and have two adult daughters.
When asked what his favorite parts of the job are, Nelson said he likes being in the courtroom, and he likes working with law enforcement and other people in the local community over the years.
Nelson said some of the cases he sees most are those dealing with criminal sexual conduct and personal injuries, where the primary witnesses are county citizens, as opposed to law enforcement officials.
He said part of his job as county attorney, other than prosecuting cases, is to provide legal advice to the county government. That’s something he said has been put somewhat on the back burner due to much of his office’s time going toward criminal cases.
Nelson said that will be changing with the addition of a new assistant to his office. With the additional help with criminal cases, he said he’ll be able to focus more of his attention on the civil side of law practice. He’s looking to provide more advice to local government offices, oversee more contracts and enforce more county ordinances that he said have been somewhat sacrificed.
He considers himself more skilled in county government and feels positive about where things are headed.
“I have a lot of experience, a lot of understanding with how things work and how they can be accomplished,” he said.
