Church’s annual lutefisk meal returns to Emmons

EMMONS — For the 54th year in a row, Emmons Lutheran Church will have its lutefisk supper in just a few weeks.

Settings this year will be at 11 a.m. and 12:30, 6 and 7 p.m. Nov. 11 at the church, 490 Pearl St. in Emmons.

Church secretary Sheila Bjelland said the annual dinner is typically the second Tuesday in November, and that the Norwegian fish was a meal staple when the traditional supper originated over five decades ago. She said the church, which was founded in 1902, used to see as many as 1,000 guests for the lutefisk supper, but that in recent years attendance for the day is around 800. Bjelland thinks this could be due to lutefisk not being quite as popular with younger generations. Nevertheless, she said the supper still receives visitors from all over, including from Wisconsin, Iowa and other regions of Minnesota.

The dinner menu also consists of meatballs, mashed potatoes with gravy, corn, cabbage salad, cranberry relish, lefse and pastries.

Tickets are available in advance, and are $16 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under. Tickets can be purchased from Betty Knudson, Security Bank locations in both Emmons and Albert Lea or at the church itself during its office hours, which are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and 9 to 11:30 a.m. Sunday.

Bjelland said the entire supper is made and organized by church members. Members range from being in the fifth grade to being over 90, she said. Bjelland — who refers to herself as a “newcomer,” even though she’s been a member for over 30 years and secretary for 26 — said that she’s a part of the meatball committee, on top of taking ticket orders as a part of her secretarial job.

“Everybody’s involved in some way,” she said. “It’s great to see that kind of fellowship from everyone.”
