An Albert Lea man is facing charges after a chase on Sunday that started four miles south of the Iowa border and ended in a crash near Twin Lakes in Freeborn County.
Eddy De Los Santos, 45, appeared in Freeborn County District Court Monday morning on one count of fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle, a felony, and one count of driving after revocation, a misdemeanor.
According to court documents, the chase began on Worth County Highway 105 near Diamond Jo Casino.
A Worth County Sheriff’s Office deputy reportedly observed De Los Santos in a 2001 gold Ford Taurus driving in excess of 70 mph in a 55 mph zone. The deputy activated his emergency lights and siren and attempted to stop the car, and De Los Santos reportedly sped up to more than 90 mph.
Freeborn County authorities were alerted to the chase at 11:04 p.m. At that time, a Worth County deputy was in pursuit of the car northbound on Interstate 35.
De Los Santos ultimately lost control of the car on a curve in the road and crashed at 72898 140th St.
Court documents state the car appeared to have rolled over into the ditch and collided with the guy wires on a telephone pole.
De Los Santos was transported to Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea as a precautionary measure and was then transported to the Freeborn County jail.
Albert Lea police said De Los Santos was cited earlier Sunday morning for driving after revocation after a traffic stop near the intersection of West Ninth Street and South Broadway.
In court on Tuesday, Freeborn County District Court Judge Steve Schwab ordered De Los Santos be released on unconditional bail of $15,000. His next court appearance is slated for Nov. 13.
A message left for Worth County Sheriff Jay Langenbau was not immediately returned.
