Incumbent 4th District Commissioner Christopher Shoff will keep his seat after being re-elected Tuesday to a third term.
Shoff, 40, beat former Albert Lea Mayor Randy Erdman, 61, by about 150 votes.
Shoff didn’t return calls for comment, but Erdman wished him well.
“I want to congratulate Mr. Shoff,” he said. “I hope he gets to accomplish all the things he wants to.”
Erdman also thanked all of his supporters and said it was a great experience running for county commissioner. Erdman served as the 2nd Ward Albert Lea city councilor from 2003 through 2007 and as Albert Lea mayor from 2007 through 2009.
Incumbents Kelly Callahan, county recorder; Craig Nelson, county attorney; Pat Martinson, county auditor/treasurer; and Dan Belshan, 2nd district commissioner, all kept their seats after running unopposed.
“Thank goodness it’s finally over,” said Callahan after the lengthy campaign season. “I appreciate the opportunity and really enjoy it.”
As recorder, Callahan oversees all vital records, such as births, deaths, marriages and divorces in Freeborn County and makes sure titles and other similar legal documents are completed and filed properly.
Martinson said there seemed to be a solid turnout at the polls, and said the busiest voting times seemed to be after 3 p.m. once more people were getting out of school and off of work.
Martinson was appointed by the Freeborn County commissioners to take over for Dennis Distad on Jan. 1, 2013, after he retired. She was chief deputy auditor-treasurer at the time and had been training under Distad to transition into the role. She’s been working in the Freeborn County Auditor-Treasurer’s Office since 1990. This was her first election as a candidate.
Nelson said he’s looking forward to continuing his work. He’s been the county attorney for almost 24 years and has been a lawyer in the Albert Lea area for about 38 years.
“I’ve enjoyed my work for many years and look forward to continuing to serve my community,” he said. “I love doing this.”
