Albert Lea boys’ hockey falls at Mankato West

In a span of three days, the Albert Lea boys’ hockey team played the top two teams in the Big Nine Conference standings.

After beating Rochester Mayo 2-1 on Thursday, the Tigers fell 3-1 Saturday at Mankato West, the only team without a conference loss.

Albert Lea’s goal was scored by Foster Otten. Brady Loch and Bergen Lundak were credited with the assist. Garrett Matz faced 29 shots on goal and made 26 saves.

Through six games, the Tigers are averaging 2.33 goals per game, and coach Roy Nystrom said he’s aiming for more offensive production.

Alex Claassen leads the team with four goals on the season, and seven other players scored either one or two goals.

Matz has been strong in the goal with 173 total saves and a .920 save percentage.

Next, the Tigers (3-3 overall, 3-3 Big Nine Conference) host New Ulm (3-1-1 overall, 3-1 Big South Conference) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Eagles are coming off a 5-5 tie at home against Hutchinson.
