A barrage from beyond the arc wasn’t enough give the Albert Lea boys’ basketball team its first win of the season.
Jake Thompson buried five 3-pointers and scored a team-high 22 points on Monday, but Albert Lea fell 75-59 at Stewartville.
“It was definitely our most balanced night offensively,” said Albert Lea coach Lucas Kreuscher. “We continue to see a lot of attention inside, and it gives opportunities for our guards. We were able to take advantage of that a little bit.”
Dedoch Chan led Albert Lea in the paint with 15 points, six rebounds, two assists and a steal.
The mascot of both teams is the Tigers.
Thompson was one of three Albert Lea players who scored in double digits. Teaming with Thompson in the backcourt was Jake Kilby who was a rebound away from a double-double with 11 points, nine boards, three assists and three steals.
Albert Lea trailed 40-28 at halftime but shaved its deficit to eight points in the second half, Kreuscher said.
“We were able to create some shots, and I thought we moved the basketball a little more,” Kreuscher said. “We also had good shot selection.”
Mal Pine had four points, and Kole Smith added three.
Stewartville improved to 4-4.
Next, Albert Lea (0-10 overall, 0-7 Big Nine Conference) will play at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 3 at Mankato East (6-5 overall, 4-3 Big Nine Conference).
