Albert Lea girls’ hockey team snaps skid, defeats Fairmont

After Tuesday’s near miss in overtime, the Albert Lea girls’ hockey team shattered a nine-game losing streak Thursday with a 5-2 win against Fairmont at Albert Lea City Arena.

Five goals matched the Tigers’ best offensive output of the year, a 5-1 win at Mankato West in the season opener.

With goals by Maddy Carstens and Hannah Savelkoul in the second period, Albert Lea took a 2-0 lead and never trailed through an eventful third period.

Carstens and Savelkoul scored again in the third to extend Albert Lea’s lead, 4-0. Madi Herrera added a late goal between a pair of Fairmont scores with less than four minutes left.

Katie Schwarz led the Tigers’ defense with 32 saves.
