Dog shot in foot after attacking officer

An Albert Lea police officer shot a dog Tuesday night after it reportedly began to attack him.

The dog, a boxer mix, was injured in the foot, and taken to the animal shelter, along with a pit bull.

Police were alerted to the dogs at 6:38 p.m. from a woman at 1312 Academy Avenue. The woman stated there were two dogs running loose and that it appeared they may be aggressive.

Ten minutes later, police were notified that a man at 647 E. Seventh St. had been bit in the hand by a pit bull as he went outside of his house to walk his dog. The pit bull and another dog reportedly came running up to the man’s front porch.

Officers searched for the dogs in the area and at one point the boxer mix reportedly began running toward an officer, snarling and growling. As the dog reportedly began to jump off the ground toward the officer, the officer fired two rounds at it. One bullet struck the dog in the foot.

The dogs’ owner, Joseph Russell Allen, 25, of Albert Lea, was reportedly out of town at the time of the incident. He will be cited for two violations of dog at large, and the dogs will be given potentially dangerous declarations, according to police.

Allen has been cited for dog at large violations two times previously in 2014 and once in 2012.
