50 years ago: 1964
• State College of Iowa, located in Cedar Falls, won the Pecan Bowl 19-17 over Lamar Tech and won the NCAA College Division Midwest Title. The quarterback for State College of Iowa was Rich Oliphant, a graduate of Albert Lea High School.
• Northwood handed St. Ansgar their first loss of the season 71-64 with balanced scoring from Bruce Helvick with 19 points, Orv Hogen, 17, Kary Paulson, 15, and Mike Ingersoll with 12.
• Dave Mueller scored 11 points and Ron Holton, 10, in a losing cause for Albert Lea in its 59-47 loss to Mankato.
25 years ago: 1989
• Alden-Conger-Freeborn improved its season record to 4-1 and its Gopher Conference record to 2-0 after defeating Maple River 54-52. Alden-Conger-Freeborn was led by Darci Evenson with 17 points, Jenny Stenzel, 12, and Kim Erickson, 11.
• The Albert Lea wrestling team won a tournament in Algona, Iowa, by 2 points. Scott Johnson at 135 pounds and Brian Hensch at 171 pounds placed first in their weight classes.
• Todd Williamschen scored the winning goal with 4:10 left in the game for the Albert Lea boys’ hockey team in its 5-4 win over Cretin-Derham Hall.
10 years ago: 2004
• United South Central raised its season record to 3-1 after defeating Randolph 65-59. Brandon Haugh scored 19 points, had 12 rebounds and 3 steals, and Adam Schrader had 16 points and rebounds for USC.
• The Albert Lea boys’ hockey team defeated Rochester Mayo 4-2 and improved to 8-1 on the season. Scoring goals for the Tigers were Tony Dugstad, Beau Larson, Quinn Ellingson and Jon Breuer.
• The Glenville-Emmons girls’ basketball team won its first game of the season 53-46 against LeRoy-Ostrander. Ashley Lau scored 18 points, and Chelsey Ziebell 16 for Glenville-Emmons.
• The Lake Mills boys’ basketball team remained undefeated at 7-0 after defeating Belmond-Klemme 83-56. The Bulldogs were led in scoring by Joe Woelfel and Cole Christianson with 14 points each.
• The NRHEG girls’ basketball team defeated Waterville-Elysian-Moristown 51-45. Traci Nelson scored 19 points and Alison Anderson, 14, for NRHEG.
