Weekend Planner: Bolshoi’s ‘The Pharaoh’s Daughter’ to come to Albert Lea

“The Pharaoh’s Daughter” will be coming to Albert Lea this weekend with Live in HD: Bolshoi Ballet.

The ballet will be shown at 5 p.m. Sunday at the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center, 147 N. Broadway.

“The Pharaoh’s Daughter” tells the tale of Englishman Lord Wilson who is traveling through Egypt. A powerful sandstorm breaks out and Wilson is forced to hide in a pyramid until the storm blows over.

This pyramid, however, houses the tomb of the daughter of one of Egypt’s pharaohs. After taking some opium, Wilson imagines the princess comes to life and when she places her hand over his heart, he is transported to the past.

The plot of the ballet is loosely based on “Le Roman de la Momie” by Theophile Gauthier. The ballet was choreographed by Marius Petipa and in 2000, the Bolshoi Theatre commissioned Pierre Lacotte to give new life to the ballet.

The main roles in the ballet are danced by Bolshoi principals Svetlana Zakharova, Nina Kaptsova and Ruslan Skvortsov.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $12 for students and they can be bought at the Albert Lea Convention and Visitors Bureau or from actonbroadway.com.
