Dorothy Forland, 1946-2015

Dorothy “Lonnie” LaNee (Boutelle) Forland, 68, of Northwood died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2015, from a cranial aneurysm at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

A celebration of her life will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. S. in Northwood, with the Rev. Randy Baldwin of Silver Lake Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Silver Lake Lutheran Church Cemetery in rural Northwood. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.

Dorothy “Lonnie” LaNee (Boutelle) Forland was born Sept. 2, 1946, in Mason City, the daughter of Doyle and Dorothy (Flarup) Boutelle. Lonnie graduated from Northwood-Kensett High School in 1964 and the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls in 1968.

She was united in marriage to Steve Forland Nov. 30, 1968, in Northwood. After their marriage Lonnie taught vocal music at Edgewood-Colesburg for three years and worked at Carleton-Stewart Music Store in Mason City. The family moved to the farm in rural Northwood in 1979. Lonnie also worked for Herbergers in Albert Lea, retiring in 2010.

Lonnie was a devoted wife and mother, and after her daughter, Carrie, became ill with leukemia she devoted her time taking care of her, making sure she was happy and comfortable until her daughter’s death.

Lonnie’s passions were music, cooking, baking, quilting, reading and exercising. She also enjoyed knitting, gardening, boating on Silver Lake and walking in the woods identifying different wild flowers. Lonnie’s specialties were canning dill pickles and making lefse. Her real love and pastime was spending quality time with her granddaughter, Brooke.

She was a member of New Horizons Band in Mason City and RSVP Pen Pal Program.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Steve Forland, of Northwood; son, Chad (Tara) Forland, of Emmons; two grandchildren, Brooke Forland of Emmons and Kyle Dion of Roseau; sister, Carol (Phil) Johnson, of Mason City; three sisters-in-law, LaVonne (John) Welch of Mason City, Chris Moore of Northwood and Barb (Ted) Neils of Minneapolis; as well as many nieces, nephews and other extended family members and friends.

Lonnie was preceded in death by her daughter, Carrie Forland; parents Doyle and Dorothy Boutelle; and her mother and father-in-law Vallie and L.M. “Doc” Forland.
