The Lake Mills wrestling team strung together five consecutive dual victories to win its home tournament, according to a press release.

The Bulldogs produced several highlights, and the top one was the team’s upset over Class 2A’s No. 7 team, Humboldt. The Wildcats defeated Lake Mills every year since they joined the tournament in 2011, said Lake Mills coach Alex Brandenburg.

The Bulldogs wrestled more aggressively than they had all year and picked up several key pins in toss-up matches, Brandenburg said. Javi Gallardo bumped up to 120 pounds and trailed 4-0 before reversing Corey Kasperbauer to his back and getting the pin.

“Javi’s pin was a huge momentum swing in the dual,” Brandenburg said. “Michael Olsen and Max Bergo also got pins in matches that I considered Humboldt to be favored in.”

After the dual, the Bulldogs had a 48-27 signature win.

“I am very proud of the team effort and performance,” Brandenburg said. “Our wrestlers were fired up for this one and got the job done in great fashion.”

Lake Mills began with a 39-31 victory against North Butler.

Although the Bulldogs picked up enough pins and bonus points to win the meet, the Bulldogs were not impressive, Brandenburg said.

“There’s no way to sugarcoat our win against North Butler,” he said. “They have a solid team, but we looked bad. We lost several matches we could have won.”

Lake Mills breezed through its next three duals beating Garner-Hayfield-Ventura 72-12, United South Central 60-16, and West Hancock 84-0.

“Our kids really picked us some momentum in the three middle meets that would help them in the Humboldt meet,” Brandenburg said.

With the perfect day, Lake Mills has a 22-4 dual record for the season.
