After sweeping the regular-season series against Rochester Mayo, the Albert Lea boys’ hockey team fell to the other end of the spectrum with a pair of one-goal losses that sunk the Tigers below .500.

Rochester John Marshall defeated Albert Lea 4-3 Thursday in overtime at Albert Lea City Arena.

“That’s just the way it goes,” said Albert Lea coach Roy Nystrom. “There’s not much you can say. There were no real glaring errors on our part, and there were no real glaring errors on their part. It was just a good solid hockey game.”

After a scoreless first period, Albert Lea scored first with a short-handed goal by Alex Claassen five minutes into the second.

The Rockets responded with a pair of goals to take the lead with 6:44 left in the second.

About a minute later, the Tigers tied the game with Jack Pulley’s first of two goals.

He struck again early in the third period, and Albert Lea recaptured the lead 3-2.

However, John Marshall scored a power-play goal with 11:29 left in the third to force overtime and won with a goal three minutes into the extra period.

“We were down in the end, but were putting pressure on them,” Nystrom said. “We missed and they came down to our end and scored.”

Next, Albert Lea (8-9, 5-6 Big Nine Conference) will play at 2 p.m. Saturday at Red Wing (2-14-1, 1-8-1 Big Nine Conference). The Wingers lost four of five overtime games and have seven one-point losses.
