The first time the Albert Lea boys’ hockey team played Austin this season, the Tigers had twice as many shots on goal and won 5-0.
In Thursday’s rematch at Riverside Arena in Austin, both teams had the same number of scoring opportunities, but Albert Lea managed to win 5-0 again for its 18th consecutive victory over the Packers.
About a minute into the first period, Albert Lea’s Jack Pulley scored his seventh goal of the season. He was assisted by Lucas Hacker and Dalton Flatness. Eleven minutes later, Mitchell Evans scored his first goal of the year on a power-play with an assist from Brady Loch.
Albert Lea extended its lead to three goals 3:35 into the second period on a score by Bergen Lundak from Alex Claassen. Claassen found the net next with a power-play goal. He leads the team with 16 goals and 17 assists on the season.
In the third period, Lundak scored his second goal of the game for the second consecutive game. He has seven goals and four assists this season.
The Tigers’ five-goal win broke a streak of eight straight games decided by one goal and gave the team a two-game winning streak.
Next, Albert Lea (10-14, 6-11 Big Nine) will play at 2 p.m. Saturday at Winona (4-20, 3-15 Big Nine) in the season finale for both teams.
