HAYWARD — Freeborn Construction Inc. has been in business for over five decades, and business is only getting better.

The company, started in 1962, will celebrate 53 years this year. It’s owned by Dennis Haugen — one of the original owners who is now retired — and his son, Brad.

The company, located at 80275 County Road 46, currently maintains a number of townships in the area, including Hayward. During the winter months the company is typically busy with clearing drainage ditches and snow removal. Office Manager Jill McBreen said there is even a beaver dam that’s currently being cleared out of one of the drainage areas the company has been tasked with.

In the warmer months the company is usually busy with ditch cleaning and maintaining roads in and around Freeborn County and surrounding townships.

According to McBreen, there hasn’t been any drop in business during the changes in seasons for the past few years. She said business has been steady and busy year-round, which is how the company likes it.

McBreen said there are about 22 employees at Freeborn Construction — including its two owners — and many of them have been employed there for quite some time.

“It’s a tight-knit staff,” she said. “We’ve stuck together a long time.”
