50 years ago: 1965

• The Wells High School basketball team defeated Janesville 72-56 for its 11th win of the season. Jeff Miller scored 17 points and Tom Colby and Bob Prange, 12, for the Wildcats.

• Winners in the Albert Lea women’s city bowling tournament included the following: team event, Broadway Theater, team members were Theresa Brua, Betty Keesling, Barbara Meillier, Joyce Schreiber and Doris Hanson; high series, Lorrie Kelly; high game for the first week, Virgina Lindbeck.

• Fred Jimenez of Albert Lea won the South Central Section Golden Gloves welterweight title with a first-round knockout.

• In high school Border League basketball, Freeborn defeated Elmore 79-66. Freeborn was led by Rick Bishop with 26 points, Al Jensen, 19; Don Marpe, 15; and Dick McKean, 12.

25 years ago: 1990

• Chad Hacker, Kyle Thomas, Mark Erlandson, Todd Williamschen and Jason Studier scored one goal each for Albert Lea in its 5-2 win over Owatonna. The Tigers’ Big Nine Conference mark improved to 7-3-1, and their season record improved to 13-5-1.

• The Albert Lea wrestling team won the regular-season Big Nine Conference title with an 8-0 record after defeating Faribault 33-22. Winning matches for the Tigers were Jamie Cantu at 103 pounds; Max Bjerke, 119; Albert Savala, 125; Scott Johnston, 135; Dave Mendenhall, 145; and Brian Hensch, 171. The Tigers finished the regular season with a record of 12-2.

• Winners in the Albert Lea Knights of Columbus Albert Lea area free-throw shooting contest were the following: boys, Chris Wagner, age 10; Adam Martinson, 11; Adam Conn, 12; Scott Erickson, 13; Pete Breitholtz, 14; girls, Nicole Peter, 8; and Tammy Sime, 13.

• Pam Stoltz scored 25 points and had 15 rebounds, and Lori Coughlin scored 16 points for the Albert Lea girls’ basketball team in its 50-42 victory over Mankato West.

10 years ago: 2005

• Freshman Hali Hendrickson scored 26 points and had 10 rebounds, and Liz Thompson had 11 points in the Albert Lea girls’ 59-42 win over Faribault.

• Goalie Clay Casanova posted a shutout for the Albert Lea boys’ hockey team in its 3-0 win over Rochester Mayo. Scoring goals for the Tigers were Cory Ellertson, Peter Bracker and Jon Breuer.
