Tax information compromised for some retirees

ST. PAUL — Tax documents for dozens of St. Paul government retirees, which include Social Security numbers, have been mistakenly mailed to the wrong addresses.

The city said W-2 income tax forms for 134 retirees went to other retirees. The city says it’s switching to a new payroll system and was checking updated addresses for former employees when the glitch occurred. Some addresses were mismatched.

Former firefighter Patrick Smith said the mistake has raised new concerns about identity theft. The city reissued Smith’s W-2 when he didn’t receive the original. He said he’ll continue to monitor his accounts closely for possible breaches.
