The Interchange Wine & Coffee Bistro will be designated Albert Lea’s first Blue Zones restaurant this week.
The restaurant — formerly known as Prairie Wind Coffee before owners Lisa and Patrick Hanson decided to add more food to the menu as well as the addition of beer and wine — will be officially named a Blue Zones restaurant on Thursday. There will be a ribbon cutting and certificate presentation, as well as appetizers, drawings, music and Wine at Five.
“The Interchange Wine & Coffee Bistro is pleased to be a part of the Blue Zones Project,” said owners Lisa and Patrick Hanson in a news release. “We strive to provide our customers with wholesome foods, and all our dishes are made from scratch. We are proud to be Albert Lea’s first Blue Zones Restaurant and would love to have you come and celebrate with us.”
In order to become a Blue Zones restaurant, a restaurant needs to complete certain designation criteria on the Blue Zones restaurant pledge.
The designation criteria include offering at least three healthy main-dish items that aren’t salads, earning two-thirds of the total points on the pledge by implementing pledge actions and implementing at least one pledge action per category. The categories include nutrition improvements, menu improvements and improvements to the eating environment.
Some of the pledge actions include offering fresh fruit or small portion dessert options, promoting half-size portions and serving meals on 10-inch plates or smaller.
The celebration of The Interchange Wine & Coffee Bistro’s Blue Zones designation begins at 5 p.m., according to the release. The ribbon cutting and certificate presentation will be at 5:30 p.m.
