A career-high scoring performance by Dedoch Chan wasn’t enough to lift the Albert Lea boys’ basketball team.

Chan posted 40 points, but the Tigers lost 74-60 Friday at Owatonna.

“Dedoch had a good all-around game just like he’s been having all year,” said Albert Lea coach Lucas Kreuscher. “He was scoring inside and outside.”

Jake Thompson added 13 points, two rebounds, five assists and three steals from the point guard position.

“Jake did a great job of handling the ball against their press,” Kreuscher said.

By the end of the first half, Albert Lea created 14 turnovers, but the Tigers trailed 33-26.

“I was really pleased with our half-court defense,” Kreuscher said. “The guys worked their tails off. Any time you can get that many turnovers, you’re doing something right. We just need to be able to turn those turnovers into points.”

Albert Lea had a single-digit deficit with about eight minutes remaining in the second half until a four-point play by Owatonna swung the momentum toward the Huskies, Kreuscher said.

Next, Albert Lea (0-24, 0-20 Big Nine) will play at 7:30 p.m. at Austin (12-12, 11-9 Big Nine).

The Packers are coming off a 69-65 home loss against Mankato East. Austin has lost three of its last four games, but all three losses were against teams in the top four spots of the Big Nine Conference standings. When Austin played at Albert Lea on Jan. 9, the Packers won 90-50.
