Editorial: Get outside in this weather

Published 9:30 am Friday, March 13, 2015

With the warm weather we have seen in the last week, children and adults alike are getting an itch to enjoy some time outdoors.

Minnesota weathers can sometimes be rough because of cold temperatures, cloudy days and less than desirable ice and snow. When milder than normal temperatures come around, let’s take advantage of them.

Though it’s unclear if the good weather is here to stay, we encourage you to get out and enjoy some of Albert Lea’s outdoor amenities.

For children and adults who enjoy walking or running, there is the Blue Zones Walkway, a five-mile trek around Fountain Lake that brings with it beautiful views of one of Albert Lea’s gems.

There is the Blazing Star Trail that runs from Albert Lea Lake to Myre-Big Island State Park. Though the total length of this trail is six miles, there is the capability for shorter lengths as well.

The Blue Zones Project walking moais kick off in May, and this would be a good chance to get a head start.

For parents with children, there are more than 40 parks throughout the city, many with play equipment such as swings and slides, not to mention the skate park and courts for basketball, pickleball and tennis.

We encourage people wherever they are at to treat the space with respect and to follow any posted rules.

In addition to these opportunities, Albert Lea’s Parks and Recreation Department has additional activities scheduled in the next few weeks, including a family mystery movie night at 7 p.m. today at the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center and a trip to the Serengeti Waterpark in Owatonna in early April, to name a few. Take advantage of the warm weather. As we all know, Minnesota weather can be unpredictable.
